POOR DEVILS – The peasant revolts of 1525 in the Bishopric of Trento

The exhibition “Poor devils” will be inaugurated at the Museo Diocesano Tridentino, in the rooms of Palazzo Pretorio, from 24 October 2025. The peasant revolts of 1525 in the bishopric of Trento”. The initiative is part of the Thematic Year of the Euregio Museums and is the result of an extensive research and collaboration project involving the Italian-German Historical Institute of the Bruno Kessler Foundation, the University of Trento, the MITAG – Italian War Museum of Rovereto and the Diocesan Museum of Brixen.

Five hundred years later, the exhibition recounts one of the most turbulent moments in the history of the Trentino bishopric. Between the spring and autumn of 1525, peasants, craftsmen and communities in the valley rose up against tax and feudal impositions, openly challenging the bishopric and imperial power. The insurrection, although harshly suppressed, left a deep mark on institutions and collective memory. Through works of art, documents, manuscripts, objects of use and multimedia tools, the exhibition brings back the complexity of thatexperience, offering the public the opportunity to grasp its roots, dynamics and consequences.
